If you can comfortably read a book in that spot during the day, these five can usually handle it:
- ZZ plant: stores water in thick underground stems and thrives on a little neglect.
- Snake plant: slow and steady, and needs water only every few weeks.
- Pothos: grows more slowly in low light, but keeps going.
- Cast iron plant: the name says it all.
- Parlor palm: soft, feathery and happy away from the window.
In a room with no window at all, any plant will need a grow light.
Pet note: ZZ plant, snake plant and pothos are toxic if chewed. Cast iron plant and parlor palm are on the ASPCA's list of plants that are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
