Overwatering is one of the most common reasons indoor plants die. When soil stays soggy, roots can't get air, and they start to rot.

The easiest fix costs nothing: a wooden chopstick. Push it a few inches into the soil, wait a minute, and pull it out.

  • Dark, damp soil clinging to it? Wait a few more days.
  • Clean and dry? Time to water.

When you water, go slowly until water runs out of the drainage hole, then empty the saucer. If a pot has no hole, use it as a cover pot and keep the plant in a plastic nursery pot inside.
