- Holiday cactus: blooms in winter, forgives a missed watering, and is generally considered pet-safe.
- African violet: small, cheerful, and blooms on and off all year in a bright window.
- Peperomia: compact, sturdy and pet-friendly.
- Pothos or snake plant: nearly indestructible, just not for homes with pets that nibble.
And about poinsettias: they're not the deadly plant many people think. Their milky sap can irritate skin and upset a pet's stomach, so keep them out of reach, but serious poisoning is rare. They do hate the cold, so wrap them up for the ride home.
